Smothered Hamburger Steaks
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 egg
- 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Lawry’s seasoning salt, to taste
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon Butter
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 6 ounces Monterey jack cheese, shredded
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 8x8 casserole dish.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, egg, pepper, and salt. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated. Top with seasoning salt.
3. Shape the beef mixture into individual hamburger steaks (around 4), approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Place the hamburger steaks in the greased casserole dish.
4. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until they become translucent and slightly caramelized, about 5 minutes. Remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.
5. In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are tender and lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Remove the mushrooms from the skillet and set them aside.
6. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the hamburger steaks in the casserole dish. Next, layer the cooked mushrooms on top of the onions.
7. Sprinkle the cheese over the onions and mushrooms, covering them completely.
8. Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are cooked through (135-140°) and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
